Referees whistle during a game to signal a stoppage in play, such as a foul, offside, or handball. They also blow the whistle to indicate the end of a half or the end of the game. Amateur referees typically have a standard set of equipment that includes a whistle, a watch or stopwatch for keeping track of game time, a set of penalty cards (yellow and red), a notebook and pen for taking notes, and a uniform that distinguishes them from the players. Some referees may also have a set of flags for signaling offside or other infractions. While the equipment may not be as advanced or specialized as that of professional referees, it is sufficient for officiating amateur games. **
